Filming was delayed and interrupted due to bad weather and the conditions of war, which meant
that the crew had to reshoot many scenes.
First takes with Anneliese Uhlig, Olga Limburg, Charlott Daudert and Walter Janssen were unable to
be used.
First film version in October 1943 was prohibited.
The film was later edited and reassemlbed and released in 1952/53 as Gesprengte Gitter.

It was planned that Piel would be the director and main actor in the project. He had done all the
script preparations, but due to the production delays caused in PANIK, he gave the DIE GROSSE
NUMMER film project to Karl Anton, who rewrote the script with his author Felix von Eckardt.
Harry Piel was never mentione as the original author.
